The Perfect Remedy for a Rainy Day

The Perfect Remedy for a Rainy Day

I think everyone is ready for Spring. But for now, there seems to be a lot of rain. At least in San Diego there has been more this year than recent years. Spring showers bring May flowers, so I suppose we are on the right track out of Winter.

The ultimate remedy for a rainy day is sunshine, but if that’s not available, my favorite thing to serve is Martha Stewart’s Roasted Winter Squash and Apple Soup. Store bought butternut soup can never compare to this delicious homemade recipe!

Something you may not know about me is that I have been a fan of Martha Stewart since around 12-years-old. My mom and I would set aside the Martha Stewart Living hour to have tea, play Skip-Bo, watch and relate.

We watched as she evolved, and waited, while her show took a hiatus in 2004 because of her stock trading case and conviction. When the new Martha Stewart Show aired in 2005, I could tell the Producers wanted to showcase a more “light-hearted” Martha.

It reminded me of the time Conan O’Brien appeared on the show in 2002. It was the funniest episode I had ever seen! He even topped that when he returned the next year and made a comedic sketch poking fun at how “demanding” Martha seemed to be with her employees. They had to know what people were saying. So they took it, and ran with it.

I used to be able to predict what she might say at the end of a segment. It usually had to do with the word: Perfect. Before she got convicted, Martha Stewart appeared to be just that. So perfect, that some people really hated her for it. But really, Martha made a distinct name and brand for herself. Anyone searching for help on a how to cook something, plant something, craft something – Martha is the go-to. She wasn’t supposed to go on TV and serve you mediocre recipes. She was only going to bring the best

Even though she may have had 17 recipes of “the most delectable” chocolate chip cookies, “the best” pumpkin pie recipe and everything she made was her “favorite” – absolute statements can work sometimes, and they certainly work in saying that this is the best Butternut Squash soup. The addition of the Cilantro Walnut Pesto adds the perfect little kick.

Hope you enjoy! And if you’re a Martha Stewart fan, I hope this brings back fond memories! xo
